Vacancy Ref: BHA0340-1 (recruitbha@brunel.ac.uk)

Salary R1: £29,213 – £32,590 pa incl. London Weighting. Full-time, fixed-term for 18 months

The post is funded by the EPSRC/Digital Economy programme, which supports research to realise the transformational impact of digital technologies on aspects of community life, cultural experiences, future society, and the economy. It is part of a collaborative project between Brunel (as project lead), Bristol and Lancaster Universities, and industrial partners at Zopa Ltd. and the Bristol Pound Community Interest Company.

Recent problems in the banking sector have lead to a serious reconsideration of how financial services could be provided. Developing from this theme, the project will explore how innovative digital technologies and infrastructures support financial transactions for users and organisations, and will examine how mobile, ubiquitous, tangible and web-based technologies can be used allow people to spend, lend and borrow in more sustainable ways outside of the traditional banking sector.

Candidates are expected to have (or be just about to complete) a PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, Interaction Design, or a related discipline. The applicant will have expertise in user research, qualitative methods, interaction design, and mobile and ubiquitous computing. Candidates with some experience or interest in financial services would be especially welcomed. They will be expected to undertake participatory fieldwork and lead workshops with users, design and evaluate simple prototypes, as well as support the work of the other researchers. Candidates will require outstanding research and analytical skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work to tight deadlines in a cross-disciplinary team. The post will involve a substantial travel component, both in the UK and abroad, and the applicant will be required to work closely with our academic research team and the industrial partners.

Flexible work and location arrangements will be considered, and potential applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Mark Perry at the Department of Information Systems and Computing to discuss these and other aspects of the position informally (email: mark.perry@brunel.ac.uk, or mobile: 07901 510906).
